STS-120 was NASA's 27th and final flight of the Space Shuttle program. The last mission to the International Space Station, it marked the end of the Space Shuttle program. STS-120 would be the final flight of the Space Shuttle orbiter Endeavour before being flown as a static display at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, until it was retired in July 2011. According to NASA, STS-120 was the 13th most-popular shuttle mission.[35]
The STS-120 mission was named after the Discovery orbiter which was the first spacecraft designed to remain in orbit for an extended period of time, and the first of the program's orbiters to be launched. The mission was also named after the Endeavour orbiter, the second spacecraft designed to remain in orbit for an extended period of time, and the first of the program's orbiters to be launched. STS-120 was the 4th Shuttle mission to carry out an EVA, and the first Shuttle mission to carry out a dual EVA, with the second being STS-114, which took place on 15 April 2006.[1]

The launch of STS-120 was originally scheduled for 5:45 UTC on 2 December 2007, but bad weather along the Cape Canaveral area delayed it until 10:11 UTC on that day. The launch proceeded without any issues, and the vehicle released its payload into orbit at approximately 10:14 UTC. The payload was released into a 167-by-270 kilometer orbit.[100] The STS-120 mission was the first to return an orbiter to the Kennedy Space Center since the STS-125 mission in 2006.[101] As was typical for STS-120, the shuttle returned to the Orbiter Processing Facility (OPF) at the Kennedy Space Center, where it was mated with the Solid Rocket Boosters (SRBs), and payload bay doors were opened. The shuttle was then moved to the Vehicle Assembly Building, where it would be mated to the external tank, and hatches were opened to allow atmospheric flight checks to be performed.[102] 827ec27edc
