On SQL Server 2012, the SQL Server client network library no longer uses the NegotiateSecurityContext call with the SPN parameter. Instead, this call is replaced by the SspiNegotiate function. This function is called with the negotiateType parameter set to 0x7. This means Kerberos is being negotiated.
If the SPN is not present, when attempting to connect, the SQL Server client does not look for a SPN on the destination computer. Hence, the Kerberos delegation is disabled. If the SPN is present, the SQL Server client must be able to authenticate itself against the SPN for the SQL Server. The SQL Server client must do this regardless of the security context in which it is connecting. In this case, the SQL Server client attempts to use Kerberos delegation.
If you're running SQL Server 2005 or later, there's a security option you can set in the SQL Server Configuration Manager called Login ID and Password Delegation. When you set the option to Enabled, the SQL Server client uses the Kerberos delegation to connect. It may be easier to understand this new setting if you read the KB article about this setting here .
For Kerberos delegation, the client calls CoInitializeSecurity when connecting to the server. CoInitializeSecurity maps a client context to a service context. The client context must be the context of a user who has been granted the local admin role. When a user's context is passed to CoInitializeSecurity, the client context is passed on to the SQL Server Network Library and the service context is passed to the SQL Server Native Client. The SQL Server Network Library then calls SQL Server Kerberos Library to provide the necessary delegation. The SQL Server Native Client then tries to get a Kerberos security token.
Some applications, such as Java, require that the application directories and libraries are updated to a newer version before the user can update. However, there are some applications that are not explicitly API-specific, such as the X Window System, the X server source code, are automatically updated as required.
